Geography & Climate

Locating at the very tip south of South Africa, its close proximity to the ocean, Overberg enjoy cooler climate with significant coastal influence.  It is ideal for cool-climate varietals such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

White-wine selections of Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc flourish in the fairly cool environment, while red grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Syrah also achieve an admirable flair and flavor. Overberg’s growth in quality is owed to its biodiversity and high altitudes, just as much as to the passion and dedication of the local winemakers.  The region is renowned as a high-quality wine region.

Walker Bay

Best represent Overberg is perhaps Walker Bay, the region is rather small but with a big reputation.  Walker Bay snugs between valleys with its back to the ocean. Generally associated as a cooler area of the coastal region, this region is held in high regard for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay selection, just as much as for the fresh and unbending Sauvignon Blanc. With a strong maritime influence, the soils of Walker Bay are perfect for producing world-class wines. Combined with the rising wine industry, the shore city of Hermanos, situated in the center of the province, is predominantly famous for the whales that frequent Walker Bay. The region’s wines have recently gained international recognition, with wineries of Bouchard Finlayson and Hamilton Russell aiming for the finest and most elegant wines.
