Castillo di Amorosa – stunning medieval castle in wine country

Castello di Amorosa
In the hills just south of Calistoga stands one of Napa Valley’s most astonishing sights: a medieval Tuscan castle, complete with towers, battlements and a drawbridge. It was the lifelong dream of fourth-generation vintner Dario Sattui, who spent fifteen years building it by hand using Old World methods. More than 170 containers of antique bricks and tiles were shipped from Europe. Italian artisans forged the ironwork over open flame, and heavy hand-hewn doors were brought from Italy. The result has 107 rooms across eight levels, from secret passageways and a chapel to a torture chamber far below. The Great Hall, with its soaring coffered ceiling and hand-painted frescoes inspired by the Italian Renaissance, transports guests seven centuries back in time.

Beneath the castle lies a cathedral of wine: a vast barrel room lined with Roman cross-vaulted brick ceilings, where the estate’s wines quietly age. True to its Italian soul, Castello di Amorosa crafts graceful Italian-style wines, from Pinot Grigio and Sangiovese to a bold Super Tuscan blend. It also pours rich, polished Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Since opening its gates in 2007, the castle has become an unforgettable destination where history, romance and fine wine meet in true Napa splendor.

Castello di Amorosa is a destination that goes far beyond the glass, whether you’re a devoted wine lover or have never swirled a Cabernet. Wandering its courtyards, climbing its towers and exploring its candlelit cellars feels like stepping into a storybook. History buffs, architecture lovers, families and curious travelers alike will find something to marvel at around every corner. For those who don’t drink, the castle offers non-alcoholic grape juices, so everyone can raise a glass. It’s simply one of Napa Valley’s unforgettable experiences, and a visit you’ll be talking about long after you leave.
