Private Wine & Food Pairings with Screaming Eagle, Schrader and Domaine de Chevalier Bordeaux
November 2023, we had the pleasure to taste the 2019 Screaming Eagle (top flight) rated 100 points (See Event here) . Very excited to say the least but sadly it didn’t live up to expectation. We knew that the wine would require quite a few years to bottle-age, we must have rushed it.
Since, we have been anxious to taste another Vintage perhaps much older so give it time to peak. August 2024, we had the chance pop the 2014 2nd Flight and to be honest, we didn’t know what to expect.
We started off the night with Domaine de Chevalier 2018, rated at 99pt and it didn’t disappoint. Certainly a newer approach to Bordeaux, bold, expressive and quite bit of dark fruit. It is ready to enjoy at merely 6 years of age. It is unusual for Bordeaux of his caliber to be enjoyed so young, it is a modern approach to old world wine.
Moving on to the stars of the night, Screaming Eagle 2nd Flight 2014, slight mineral on the nose, perfume of fruit and dried pedal but nothing too excited… We were nervous. But tasting it was a different story. Tannins are well integrated as it glides effortlessly on the palate, flirting with our senses. Hint of oak turned into dried herbs then pedals. Such long lingering finish had us in awe while questioning our senses. Roasted Duck Breast, Pave of Leg with Vincotto Jus and Stuffed Morels was on the Menu and it couldn’t ask for a perfect match. Wow!
Schrader RBS 2014 was quite impressive. Big and bold, it is great expression of a Napa Cabernet. 10 years old and it still has a lot of weight. It is powerful, yet balanced; ripe back fruits laced with attractive spice come together for a memorable taste and it pairs nicely with Loin of New Zealand Red Deer with Huckleberry Jus and Golden Chanterelles.
