Cabernet Franc is primarily a blending grape used in Bordeaux along with the more dominant Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.  In recent years, there has been a steady increase of Cabernet Franc as a single varietal or in larger amount in blends -particularly on the Right Bank of Bordeaux and Virginia Wine Country, USA.  Cabernet Franc is often thought of as the baby cousin of Cabernet Sauvignon, this grape has a profound green note of bell pepper or stem-like.  However, under the right condition, Cabernet Franc can turn into extraordinary wine with aromas and complexity to rival.

This Pine Ridge Cabernet Franc 2013 is superb.  Deep dark color on the glass, generous nose of  dark fruit, berry, plum mixed with sage, spice, coffee leading to enjoyable finish of roast caramel, chewy tannin and hint of black pepper.  There seems to be a significant amount of Cabernet Sauvignon used in this blend for structure and complexity; beautifully crafted, this wine can handle a juicy steak or can be laid down and enjoy a few more years down the road, until 2023. (17.5+/20)
